Griffin Gordon, LMFT-A
About Me
Hi, I’m Griffin Gordon, an Identity Specialist and Narrative Therapist based out of Hamden, Connecticut.
Let me explain these roles a little more—your identity and life narrative go hand in hand. The ways in which we construct our identities, or see ourselves, characterizes our entire reality. Your self concept has an immeasurable impact on your thought process and behaviors, which directly controls the ways in which we feel and make decisions. Narrative therapy fills in the gaps from focusing solely on oneself, as it is based on the idea that our realities are socially constructed based on our relational experience. Examining your individual identity and your relationships throughout your personal history helps you better understand why your challenges have been so challenging and empowers you to write a different story.
My Approach
As a narrative therapist, I see you as the expert on your own story. I prioritize your unique experiences, strengths, and familial/cultural background as I learn about who you are. While often critiqued for being overly-manualized, I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques and frameworks specifically for symptom management, helping your current problems feel a little less overwhelming. Through this process of learning, we start to get a better grasp on what the story of your life has been, and how the way that story is told does not serve you. Then begins the process of Reauthoring, where you learn to take control of the way you tell the story of both your relational and individual identity.
If you truly see yourself as capable of handling your challenges and achieving your ideal reality, it immediately becomes possible.
Myself:
My own personal life experience means I am especially equipped to work around Racial and LGBTQ+ Identity as well as those who struggle with substance use, either personally or within their environments. That being said, the principles of what I do are applicable to any presenting problem, and motivated clients will find success through this style of therapy.
I believe in the power of therapy to create meaningful change. My role is to support you as you heal, grow, and move toward a more fulfilling life—whether through personal insight, strengthened relationships, or an improved sense of well-being and control.
If you’re ready to take the next step on your journey toward self-empowerment, I’d be honored to work with you. Contact me today to schedule a consultation.
